When you’re hot, you’re hot. That’s the best way to explain yesterday’s NHL gambling bet of the night win for the Minnesota Wild over the Chicago Blackhawks.
I wish we had put money on the Ottawa Senators to win. Being the underdog at +190 the payout would have been nice. But that’s what happens with NHL gambling, sometimes, even though you’re absolutely convinced of a result, you end up being wrong.
Last night, both underdogs won. Which is great for our stat line. We’ll get to that at the end of the post. But for now, we’re looking at the Carolina Hurricanes being the underdog to get the victory over the Metropolitan Division-leading Washington Capitals.

What can the Carolina Hurricanes do to win against the team on the best form in the NHL right now? Just keep doing what they’re doing.
I know they have two losses in a row, one being a big 7-1 blowout to the Boston Bruins. But at the moment Boston is on some ridiculous goalscoring run. But of their last four games (excluding the loss to Boston), the Hurricanes soundly beat the Penguins and took the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals to a single goal in high scoring affairs.
The Hurricanes are doing everything right, they just aren’t getting the bounces they need. At least not on the ice. It’s a bit of a stretch here, but I think the accepted sale of the team could bring a relief to the team.
Generally, players don’t both themselves with the business side of the team, but when butts aren’t in seats like in Carolina and the soon-to-be-former owner is having very public spats with his kids, that starts to seep in. So with a new owner comes a new lease on life, or at least the game.
Carolina wins this game with the wind in their sails from the thought of greener pastures ahead. Look, this team regardless of ownership is moving int he right direction. Things are starting to look up for Carolina.
(As I wrote that Overboard by Russian Circles was playing. Perfectly encapsulates the mood.)
